8 Rules for Setting New Year Resolutions Video

Where do you want to be a year from now?

New Year is a great time for saying "goodbye" to the past, and "hello" to the future!

What will it hold for you? What goals do you want to achieve? Where do you want to be this time next year?

Here are eight rules for setting New Year Resolutions that work for you.

Rule #1: Commit to Your Resolution. To succeed you must have faith in your goal and believe you can achieve it. Ask yourself, "Is this resolution my idea or someone else's?," "Does it motivate and invigorate me?," "Does it align with my values and long-term plans?"

Rule #2: Be Realistic. Don't set the bar too high, otherwise you risk failing. Instead, establish challenging but realistic goals.

Rule #3: Write It Down. Writing something down is a simple but powerful way of making it real. Once you've written it out, put it somewhere you'll see it, like your fridge, desk or your phone.

Rule #4: Make a Plan. Envision where you want to be, then work backwards! Can you break up your goal into smaller, more manageable sub-goals? What can you do today to take that first step toward achieving your resolution?

Rule #5: Be Flexible. Remember that things may not always go to plan. Don't be afraid to change or adapt your resolution if things don't work out.

Rule #6: Use Reminders. Stay focused on your resolution by setting up a formal reminder system. Leave reminders at work, at home or even in your car. Put planned actions into a To-Do List and set deadlines in your calendar.

Rule #7: Track Your Progress. Start a Resolution Journal to record your progress. What have you found motivating? What have you found hard? And how did you stay on track during the tough times?

Rule #8: Celebrate! When you hit a milestone or achieve something you're proud of, celebrate it! Doing this will keep you motivated as you work toward your resolution.
